Gossip Girl (Gossip Girl, #1) From the back cover of Gossip Girl by Cecily von Ziegesar
Welcome to New York City's Upper East Side, where my friends and I live, go to school, play, and sleep---sometimes with each other.

S is back from boarding school, and if we aren't careful, she's going to win over our teachers, wear that dress we couldn't fit into, steal our boyfriends' hearts, and basically ruin our lives in a major way.

I'll be watching closely. I'll be watching all of us. It's going to be a wild and wicked year. I can smell it.

Review: Lock and Key

Lock and Key

Title: Lock and Key
Author: Sarah Dessen
ISBN/Publisher: 978-0-14-241472-9/Speak (part of Penguin)
Age Group/Genre: Young Adult

Ruby's mom walked out on her and left Ruby to live in a house without running water or heat for a couple of months. Seventeen year old Ruby tries to keep her mom's disappearance on the down low because she's going to be eighteen soon, which means legally...she is free. However, the landlords discover Ruby and no mom, on their land just a few months shy of her bday.

Now, social service's place her in the care of her older, estranged sister, Cora and Cora's successful husband, Jamie. Ruby is moved into a beautiful home, where she will receive private school education, and on the possible upside...there's a cute neighbor boy, who happens to be the same age as her. However, all these great things are around her, but she still can't let down her guard because she has never had to depend on anyone, but herself.

Will Ruby let people into her life???

Hmmm...Sarah Dessen is an amazing author and does it again!!! This is a book about friendship and family. It is somewhat heartbreaking, but at the same time, I got this warm fuzzy feeling because the moral of the story was sweet.

I would have to say that Lock and Key is totally character plot driven and these are my type of stories. Ruby, Cora, Jamie, Nate, and the minor characters are the ones that build the novel. I wanted to be in this story. Ruby, yes...struggles with accepting people, but as the reader you want to push her and protect her from situations. Then, there's Nate...a good guy. Probably the cute neighbor that every girl wants. And then, we get Cora and Jamie...they remind me of my sister and brother-in-law. They're loving and caring and would help their family no matter what.

It is a beautifully written story and if you're a fan of Sarah Dessen, I promise you won't be disappointed. I will continue to follow Mrs. Dessen and her characters...no matter how old I get!

Favorite lines...
Leaving was easy. It was everything else that was so damned hard. page 202

"My point is, there are a lot of people in the world. No one ever sees everything the same way you do; it just doesn't happen. So when you find one person who gets a couple of things, especially if they're important ones...you might as well hold on to them. You know?" page 312
It's a lot easier to be lost than found. It's the reason we're always searching, and rarely discovered---so many locks, not enough keys. page 365

What is family? They were the people who claimed you. In good, in bad, in parts or in whole, they were the ones who showed up, who stayed in there, regardless. It wasn't just about blood relations or shared chromosomes, but something wider, bigger. [...] we had many families over time. Our family of origin, the family we created, as well as the groups you moved through while all of this was happening: friends, lovers, sometimes even strangers. None of them were perfect and we couldn't expect them to be. You couldn't make any one person your world. The trick was to take what each could give you and build a world from it. page 400

From the back cover of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

Ever since Harry Potter had come home for the summer, the Dursleys had been so mean and hideous that all Harry wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he's packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature who says that if Harry returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike.

And strike it does. For in Harry's second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor and a spirit who haunts the girls' bathroom. But then the real trouble begins---someone is turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly b
e Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts suspects...Harry Potter himself!

Review: Postcards From No Man's Land

Title: Postcards From No Man's Land
Author: Aidan Chambers
ISBN/Publisher: 978-0-14-240788-2/Speak (Part of Penguin)
Age Group/Genre: Young Adult
Awards: Michael L. Printz Award; Carnegie Medal (UK); Andersen Award (Italy)

Postcards From No Man's Land is a coming-of-age story, war, love, and families. But most importantly, Aidan Chambers interweaves two parallel stories to make one beautiful novel.

Seventeen year old Jacob Todd leaves London and goes to Holland to attend a memorial service for those who died in the World War II battle of Arnhem. He is going to honor his Grandfather, Jacob Todd, who was wounded in the battle and never made it back home to England. Soldier Jacob was taken care of in Holland by Geertrui during the war. And Geertrui is the one that wants young Jacob to come and visit Holland during this time. We learn about Geertrui's life and what it was like during the last months of World War II. We find out about the discovery of love in modern day Amsterdam, as well as love during WWII.

But it's not all about love. We see the explorations of sexuality in a young man's life. But more seriously, the author includes the topic of assisted deaths. Young Jacob, is thrown into Geertrui's life when she is dealing with terminal cancer and is planning an assisted death. Geertrui's daughter and grandson are having problems with young Jacob being around during this time.

So, why is it so important that Jacob is with Geertrui at the time leading up to her planned death?

I'll be honest, I picked this book up originally because I loved the cover and the pages of this book. I didn't really expect much, but the fact that one of my Goodreads friends highly recommended it. And I really did enjoy this novel.

As a reader, we get a taste of Amsterdam life from a visitors point of view. The author shows us the cultures and customs and how they mix together between an English teenage boy and the Dutch citizens. I really enjoyed how Young Jacob had to find out his family history to figure out and find his true identity. It goes to show that knowing where you come from is an important when figuring out yourself as a person. In the end, I was very impressed with the authors ability to change the story from present to past and past to present. (But if I had to choose my favorite...I loved Gertruii's story).

A few favorite lines...
You have to know you own truth and stick to it. And never despair. Never give up. There's always hope. page 42

Here is memory. For me now there is only memory. Memory and pain. All life is memory. Pain is of now, forgotten as soon as gone. But memory lives. And grows. And changes too. page 106

Ordinary people's bravery. T me that's real bravery. But you don't get medals for it or monuments put up for it. page 217

From the inside flap of Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before---and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Review: Audrey, Wait!

Title: Audrey, Wait!
Author: Robin Benway
ISBN/Publisher: 978-1-59514-192-7/Razor Bill (Part of Penguin)
Age Group/Genre: Young Adult

Do you want to read a book about great music and the paparazzi? Then you'll definitely want to read about Audrey in Audrey, Wait!

Audrey's a high school girl who loves loud music and In-N-Out. She also has a boyfriend, Evan who happens to be in this band. But Audrey breaks up with him and doesn't know at the time that the breakup will lead to an ever so popular song about her. It's called "Audrey, Wait" and it climbs the music charts to the point where it's not just locally popular, but popular EVERYWHERE.

Now, our girl Audrey is this instant celebrity. Everyone wants to know her...journalists are calling the house, kids at her high school are selling pictures of her, and kids from other schools are sneaking onto her H.S. campus to get a better look at her. All these pictures are popping up on TV and in magazines and poor Audrey doesn't even realize that they've been taken until she sees them in the media.

How does Audrey deal with this new, crazy life? And can she get back to being a regular high school girl?

Oh my goodness...Robin Benway does an amazing job writing about such a fun girl and pop culture. The book was so easy and fun to read...I COULD NOT put it down. I also loved how Benway started each chapter with a line from a great song. At the start of almost every chapter, I was like, "Oh, such an amazing song." I added a few more songs to my ipod because of this book.

Audrey, Wait! was like reality television in a book, but at the same time it kind of reminded me of my high school years in Southern California (minus the celebrity treatment and paparazzi). Just like Audrey, I love my In-N-Out and it's grilled cheese and chocolate shake (page 12). And also like her, I found myself stuck in the middle of the pit during a Warped Tour concert (page 289). Audry is in interesting person with such great friends (Jonah and Victoria) and understanding parents. These relationships and her love for music make this story real to the real person. The celebrity aspect of the book makes it interesting and pop culture related.

I definitely recommend this book if you want a fun read. It's a book meant for high school students and older because it does drop the F-bomb quite a bit and other swear words. If you enjoy bands like New Found Glory, Fall Out Boys, The Sounds, and other great similar bands...you might enjoy this too.

Review: Twisted

Title: Twisted
Author: Laurie Halse Anderson
ISBN/Publisher: 978-0-14-241184-1/Speak (part of Penguin)
Age Group/Genre: Young Adult

Tyler Miller is a high school student and he was the scrawny kid that was constantly bullied. But after he was arrested for vandalizing the high school campus and sentenced to hard labor community service, he became Mr. Muscle man.

Bethany Milbury, the most popular girl starts to take interest in Tyler. The thing is, Bethany is the daughter of his dad's boss and the sister of the boy that bullied him. However, Tyler also shows interest in Bethany and they start to hang out despite the people she's related to.

After an incident where naked pictures pop up on the Internet of Bethany, Tyler is accused and wishes he was still invisible to the world. The cops, his verbally-abusive father, the principal, and the kids around town are all out to get Tyler. He has no idea what to do and finds his life twisted. He wants to be invisible, but is suicide the answer???

When I picked up this book, I had no idea what to expect. I mean it's called Twisted and the cover is a twisted pencil. All I knew was that Anderson was writing a boy's story. And in the end I really liked the novel.

The characters were well drawn out and were characters that a person can find at any high school. To top it off, Laurie Halse Anderson did an amazing job intertwining the relationships in the book. We get the story of dysfunctional families and a young man that has no idea how to fit into society because no one really has been there to show him what a man is.

Tyler's story is relatable for boys and girls. We feel for this character and want to cheer him on and support him and maybe protect him. Anderson did it again with this novel...she captured a subject that is hard to talk about and placed it into a young adult novel so beautifully.

Definitely read this book!!!

Favorite parts...
Don't get me wrong, I like reading. But some books should come with warning labels: Caution: contains characters and plots guaranteed to induce sleepiness. Do not attempt to drive or operate heavy machinery after ingesting more than one chapter. Has been known to cause blindness, seizures, and a terminal loathing of literature. Should only be taken under the supervision of a highly trained English teacher. Preferably one who grades on the curve. -page 50

Calc was incomprehensible. I could understand irrational girls and irrational parents. But irrational numbers? -page 62

Review: The Lovely Bones

Title: The Lovely Bones
Author: Alice Sebold
ISBN/Publisher: 0-316-17072-0/Back Bay Books (part of Hachette Book Group)
Age Group/Genre: Mature Young Adult to Adult/General Fiction

Susie Salmon, a teenage girl, is raped and murdered by a neighbor. And this is how Susie begins her story. She tells us what happened, but the biggest part of the novel is how she watches everyone she knew from Heaven.

Heaven to Susie is a place that looks like the high school she would have attended, with a few exceptions. But it is also a place that can be described as an "in between." She is stuck there until she can let go of what happened on Earth. And so she watches her family and friends and how they move on after Susie's death.

Susie narration from Heaven seemed like a great idea and I really liked it. Her thoughts on this in between place really got me thinking about an afterlife and how your family moves on. But I also kind of got bored in the middle of the book. Following her family for about ten years seemed a little too long for me. But I did get through it.

This is a coming-of-age story that was interesting since the girl growing up was dead. However, we also see her siblings grow up and how they deal with a brutal death of a sister.

My major problem with the story was a sex scene towards the end of the book. I'm not going to get into detail with it because it is sort of a spoiler. But I do think the story could have done without it.

This book was alright...I wish I didn't buy it though. If my opinion counts...you should just borrow it from a friend or check it out at the library.

Review: The Last Song

Title: The Last Song
Author: Nicholas Sparks
ISBN/Publisher: 978-0-446-55564-7/Grand Central Publishing (part of Hachette Book Group)
Age Group/Genre: Young Adults and older/General Fiction

Ronnie is a seventeen year old from New York. But she won't be spending her summer after senior year with her New York friends. Her mom is sending Ronnie and her little brother, Jonah, down to a North Carolina beach town to spend time with their father.

Here's the problem for Ronnie...she's been upset with Steve (her dad) since he walked out on the family. Steve left New York after his marriage ended apparently due to the strain from leaving his teaching job at Julliard to travel and become a concert pianist. His dreams never came true and now he's living in the small town he grew up in.

Ronnie never forgave Steve for what happened. Actually, she hasn't talked to him in the three years. So when she's in the beach town with her Dad and brother, she is trying to figure out how to get her butt back to New York. But then she meets the troubled Blaze and her boyfriend Marcus, and the cute volleyball player, Will. These three will make her want to run even faster away from North Carolina, but also pull her in.

Will Ronnie's relationship with her father change and how will the three people she meet change her life???

Nicholas Sparks, a bestselling author, does it again with this novel. He does such an amazing job incorporating themes involving Christianity, love, fate, and tragedy. And again he adds in the importance of silence between people...page 133 in this book (I've noticed that he mentions this in all the books I read by him).

The characters in this novel are beautifully written and somewhat realistic. The novel is broken down in chapters that are told in four different perspectives: Ronnie's, Steve's, Will's, and Marcus's. But I will have to say that personally I found the first three the most important to me. It is the love between a father and his child. Also the love between a girl and a boy. These two relationships are the keys to what unlocks the beauty of Nicholas Sparks' writing. I also have to say that Jonah became my favorite scene stealer...he is such a cute kid (I wish I had a little brother like him).

The Last Song is a novel I will recommend to everyone, especially fans of Nicholas Sparks. The story was kind of predictable, but the emotions that I felt throughout the novel were still strong. This is a book for young adults to adults...my mom and I both loved it!!!

A few favorite parts...

"I'm not a little kid anymore. It means pissed-at-men syndrome." -Jonah, page 23 (In regards to what PMS means)

She couldn't eat here, not because she was a vegetarian-on-principle kind of person, but because she was a vegetarian-because-she-didn't-want-to-feel-sick kind of person. -Description of Ronnie's idea of being a vegetarian, page 70 (This is kind of my thoughts on why I'm a vegetarian).

"There are guys who grow up thinking they'll settle down some distant time in the future, and there are guys who are ready for marriage as soon as they meet the right person. The former bore me, mainly because they're pathetic; and the latter, quite frankly, are hard to find. But it's the serious ones I'm interested in, and it takes time to find a guy like that whom I'm equally interested in. I mean, if the relationship can't survive the long term, why on earth would it be worth my time and energy for the short term?" Will's sister, Megan, page 206 (If I was ever able to put into words my thoughts on relationships...this would be it. Now where can I find this type of guy? I'm kind of tired of waiting and the right guy is hard to find...LOL)

There's also a part in the end of the book I loved, but I'm afraid it will be a spoiler...so that just means you have to read it!!!

My Rating and also my mom's (even though I rounded hers up...she rated it 4.999999999):

December ended a few days ago and that means my month filled with John Green books ended as well. I had so much fun reading his novels. He is a funny man. I cannot wait to read his future books (especially his upcoming novel he co-wrote with David Levithan Will Grayson, Will Grayson).

Just a little bio...
John was born in 1977 and grew up in Florida. He went to boarding school in Alabama (as did his character in Looking for Alaska). When he was a kid he wanted to be an earthworm scientist, but he discovered he was good at "telling lies" and "sitting." And that is why he is a writer. Other jobs included working as a student chaplain at a children's hospital and a book reviewer. John Green is now currently working on the screenplay for Looking for Alaska. ***Want more info...make sure to check out his website.***
